Learn at your own pace
Mahjong can feel unfamiliar at first. Our lessons break the game into clear, manageable steps, with time to ask questions and learn by doing.

At Mahj Americana Social, we believe American Mahjong is at its best when it brings people together.
We create welcoming opportunities to learn, play, grow in confidence, and connect with others—whether you are picking up your first tile, joining a friendly game, or competing in league play.

Born in the United States and now living in Cape Town with her family, Steph Price is the founder of Mahj Americana Social.
Steph discovered Mahjong and taught herself how to play, developing her knowledge through practice, friendly games, and league participation.
Her experience playing in two countries shaped her belief that Mahjong is much more than a game. It is an opportunity to meet interesting people, exercise your mind, develop new skills, and become part of a welcoming community.
Steph created Mahj Americana Social to give players in Cape Town a friendly and supportive place to learn and play American Mahjong. Her teaching approach is clear, encouraging, and practical, helping new players feel comfortable while giving developing players the tools to play with greater purpose and confidence.

Understanding grows through practice. Open Play gives developing players space to make decisions, recognise patterns and enjoy a complete game with others.
The people around the table are as important as the tiles. The atmosphere is designed for conversation, laughter, friendship and the feeling that you belong.
There is always another pattern to recognise or skill to strengthen. Lessons, Open Play, membership and private experiences give every player a natural next step.
